8. Emergency Action Plan


Preparation is the key to responding to unexpected emergencies.

Although emergencies can occur anywhere, certain types of emergencies, such as specific natural disasters, are more likely in some locations than others. Emergencies not only include injuries, but illnesses such as heart attack, seizure, or stroke.

Layout of the facility

  • Any emergency vehicles called are to be met at start of Pwll Du Lane.
  • Ambulance access is via narrow lane and congested car park (ensure lane
  • remains clear during training and fixtures(see cap park layout)
  • Air Ambulance – landing area within field

Equipment

  • First Aid room is within groundsman shed (including stretchers)
  • Heart Defibrillator (nearest is PYLE CORNER POST OFFICE, BISHOPSTON)
  • All training and fixture will have a First Aider with a fully stocked first aid bag

Internal Support Personnel (at the ground)
Training and fixtures at the club are to have in place the following:

  • Club Steward
  • Coach
  • Team Manager
  • First Aider

External Support Personnel (away from the ground)
Telephone numbers for Emergency and Medical personnel, police, fire, hazardous materials team, Poison Control Centre, hospitals, power and gas companies and health department are within the club.

Assign each staff member a duty. Examples of duties include:
• a (trained) person to provide care,
• a person to control bystanders and supervise other athletes,
• a person to meet Emergency and Medical personnel,
• a person to transport the injured athlete when appropriate.

Communication

  • First Aider to call local emergency number.
  • Team Manager to inform Club Steward and manage spectators/visitors.
  • Coach to instruct personnel to meet emergency vehicles.
  • Team Manager to contact the injured player’s family or guardian, and a person
  • to deal with the media.

Follow-up

  • First Aider will be responsible for completing the appropriate documentation (accident and incident report, etc.) and refilling your first aid kits.
  • Club Chairman to put together a team to evaluate the effectiveness of the
  • Emergency Action Plan and conduct a staff debriefing.

By developing an Emergency Action Plan, you will be prepared to handle
emergency situations at South Gower RFC.
